Why Brushing Before Bed Could Protect More Than Just Your Teeth

We’ve known in functional dentistry for a long time that the health of your mouth is deeply connected to your overall health. Now, a new peer-reviewed study is backing that up in a big way.

Inflammation in Your Mouth Doesn’t Stay There

Your gums are protected by a paper-thin layer of tissue—less than 0.3 mm thick when healthy. When inflammation sets in, this barrier becomes even more porous. That means bacteria and toxins from your mouth can enter your bloodstream and quietly trigger inflammation in other parts of your body—your heart, brain, even your joints.

This is about more than just cavities or bad breath.
It’s about reducing your risk of serious diseases linked to chronic inflammation—like heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer.

What the Study Found

Published in Scientific Reports, the study followed 1,675 people over three years and discovered:

  • People who brushed only in the morning had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Nighttime brushing was most strongly associated with better heart health

  • Gum disease and oral bacteria may increase levels of inflammatory markers like IL-6 and CRP, which are tied to chronic conditions

What You Can Do Right Now

If you’re skipping brushing before bed, you may be unknowingly contributing to inflammation throughout your body.

Here’s what I personally use and recommend every day to protect both oral and systemic health:

  • Floss daily – This helps prevent gum disease and inflammation

  • Brush every night – Non-negotiable. You don’t want bacteria sitting in your mouth while you sleep

  • Stay alert for early signs – Bleeding gums, bad breath, or gum sensitivity can be early signs of inflammation

Final Thoughts

Many people have early-stage gum disease and don’t even know it. But inflammation doesn’t stay in your mouth—it travels. Taking your oral care seriously could be one of the most powerful things you do for your long-term health.

Because a healthy mouth is more than a pretty smile.
It’s a reflection of a healthy body.
